L'écrit vain
J’aime bien l’étymologie du mot « écrivain » me dit-elle doucement. Un écrit vain, cela montre bien toute la vanité de l’écriture.
Ah bon ? Elle a l’air tellement sûre de ses sources que j’ai subitement un doute. Oui, oui m’assure-t-elle, la personne qui m’a expliqué cette origine est tout à fait digne de confiance, c’est tout à fait sérieux. Sans accès à Internet qui nous permettrait de trancher illico, nous changeons de sujet de conversation. De retour chez moi, je me précipite sur Robert (l’historique). Il me rassure: écrivain provient d’un ancien escrivein, qui se rattache à la famille du verbe latin scribere (écrire). Le suffixe –ain est très courant en français. Parfois, on voit bien la base nominale (toulousain, dominicain, africain…), parfois elle n’est plus tellement identifiable comme dans suzerain ou parrain. Le mot doit donc se segmenter en écriv-ain et non en écri-vain. Quant à l’adjectif vain, il est l’aboutissement du latin vanus « vide, dégarni », et c’est une autre histoire.
Mais pourquoi sommes-nous attirés par cette fausse étymologie ? Originellement, écrivain a le même sens que scribe ou copiste. Etre écrivain consiste à écrire à la place d’un autre. Ce sens est conservé dans la locution « écrivain public », mais aujourd’hui un écrivain est « une personne qui compose des ouvrages littéraires » selon le Larousse. Ce qui est intéressant, c’est que copiste et scribe, les anciens synonymes d’écrivain, ont de nos jours des connotations péjoratives, connotations que l’on retrouve dans l’étymologie populaire « écrit vain », alors que la fonction de l’écrivain est prestigieuse…
En fait, c’est surtout le féminin « écrivaine » qui s’attire les railleries. Voici ce que disait cet idiot de Jules Renard dans son journal : « Les femmes cherchent un féminin à auteur : il y a bas-bleu. C'est joli, et ça dit tout. À moins qu'elles n'aiment mieux plagiaire ou écrivaine. »

Remarquez, "auteur" a du chien avec ses multiples féminins possibles: "auteure" (que je honnis, mais qui s'est imposé), "autrice" (retenu par l'association ADS), voire les plus rares "autoresse" ou "auteuse"...
