Pour une philosophie de l'approximation
Pour la vingtième fois en Suisse, des spécialistes de gaulthéries, de paulownias, et autres rocouyers se sont donné rendez-vous pour éprouver leurs connaissances. Non, il ne s’agissait pas de jardinage, mais de la grande finale du 20ème championnat suisse d’orthographe 2009 qui s’est déroulé dans la salle du Grand Conseil valaisan le weekend passé. Une salle de débats législatifs pour une dictée, tout un symbole !
Le jour suivant, un des organisateurs s’exprime sur les ondes de la radio romande pour commenter ce 20ème succès. Il regrette le relativisme actuel en matière d’orthographe et avance cette comparaison : quand on apprend les tables de multiplication, 7 fois 7, cela fait 49 et pas 48 ou 50. En matière d’orthographe, cela devrait être la même chose. Il y a un s ou il n’y en a pas ; c’est er ou é, etc.
Comparer la maitrise des « livrets » (comme on dit en Suisse depuis au moins Poulain de la Barre, 1691, : « Nul ne peut être un bon Chifreur, si son Livret ne sait par cœur ») avec le bon usage orthographique, c’est exagérer un brin. Si je lis une recette de cuisine bourrée de fautes d’orthographe, cela ne m’empêchera pas de réaliser le plat en question. En revanche, si je dois adapter les proportions données au nombre de convives et que je m’emmêle les pinceaux dans une règle de trois, le risque d’inmangeabilité augmente considérablement.
Il me semble qu’assimiler la précision arithmétique à la correction orthographique relève par ailleurs d’une vision scolaire et trop élémentaire de la langue et des nombres. L’approximation est une dimension fondamentale des mathématiques, tous les matheux vous le diront. On pourrait donc tout aussi bien évoquer la comparaison avec la noble science des nombres pour légitimer la notion d’approximation en ortograf, ortographe, ortaugraffe, hortaugraf… graphies qui approchent toutes la forme correcte !

Bon... je plaisantais un peu quand même, j'espère que ça c'est vu!
mais je ne pensais pas que vous étiez pratiquant (de la dictée, s'entend, mais comme l'orthographe a bien quelque chose à voir avec la religion, je pense que le terme se comprend!).

En effet, je suis pratiquant de la dictée, avec un petit côté ayatollah de l'orthographe (mais qui est la déesse Laure Thaud-Graff?), si l'on veut filer la métaphore de la religion!
Nous avons d'ailleurs dû nous croiser, me semble-t-il, à la dictée de l'UNAB à Berne, en 2006 ou 2007.

Au menu du Grand 8 de la radio romande ce vendredi, une discussion sur l’avenir de la sociabilité médiatisée par les réseaux tissés sur la Toile. Comment « gérer ses amis » quand on en a tellement ? Cette abondance pose un problème de gestion des stocks, mais également de sens du mot « ami ». Pour moi, qui suis née au milieu du siècle passé, « ami » s’oppose à « copain » sur le plan de l’intensité de la relation. Un ami est plus qu’un copain. Sans parler de l’expression désuète de « bon ami » ou « bonne amie » qui désigne encore plaisamment, en Suisse, l’amoureux ou l’amoureuse. Mais pour les dictionnaires actuels, les deux mots ne se distinguent plus que sur le plan des registres : « copain » est familier.
